Skimboarders Can Help With The BP Oil Spill

Article by Skimboard Pros

When I first heard about the BP oil spill in the Gulf my heart sank not only for the people and the sea life it would ruin. My heart also sank for all the families it’s going to effect, all those people who had made plans to go on vacation with their families this summer and enjoy all the beautiful beaches that the black, nasty substance is now washing up on.

This oil spill is effecting so many people in so many ways we can’t even count. It would take weeks and months to count all this problems this oil spill is going to cause and is causing. Most people will agree that America’s economy is picking up and moving forward, however this definitely takes a bite out of America’s recovery to say the least.

I’ve got a message for everyone who’s living close to the Gulf especially to all the skimboarders out there. I can just sit back now and visualize all the angry skimboarders who were waxing up their boards up for the summer getting ready to hit the beach along the Gulf, only to have the brakes come to a skidding halt. This is definitely your chance to give back to the sport by volunteering your services in helping to clean this disaster up or by doing whatever you can to help.

I encourage everyone who has some free time (the time that you would’ve been boarding if it weren’t for BP) to hop in your car drive down to the beaches and offer your services. Giving back to something you love brings great satisfaction and confidence.

Now let’s all pray that this disaster gets stopped and cleaned ASAP. I can still remember the Valdez oil spill and how badly that effected the wildlife and coast of Alaska but remember it got cleaned up and everything went back to normal. Lets all pray this will be the same.

Houston Maritime Lawyers say Gulf Workers are Still Feeling Effects of BP oil Spill one Year Later

Houston maritime lawyer Jason Itkin

Houston, Texas (Vocus/PRWEB) April 18, 2011

Houston maritime attorney Jason Itkin said the effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill are still being felt by many communities and workers along the Gulf coast as the first anniversary of the disaster approaches.

“Workers, families and small businesses across the Gulf are still trying to recover physically, financially and emotionally from the BP oil spill,” said Itkin, a partner in Arnold & Itkin LLP, a Houston, Texas law firm that represents injured offshore workers and those harmed by the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. “Some still need help getting back on their feet and receiving fair compensation for their losses.”

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine said the full environmental, economic and health effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill remain unclear a year after the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The study said the catastrophic accident does underscore the vulnerability of humans and ecosystems to environmental changes such as oil spills.

As much as 200 million gallons of oil gushed into the Gulf after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon. More than a million gallons of oil dispersants were dumped in the water with still unknown health consequences.

“It’s difficult to quantify the effects of the disaster when they are still rippling through communities across the Gulf,” Itkin said. “For that reason, we think that quick payouts often undervalue the actual cost of the losses and do more to relieve the oil companies of liability than to help workers and small businesses.”

The Deepwater Horizon, a massive offshore oil rig leased to BP PLC, was drilling southeast of Venice, La., in 5,000 feet of water when it exploded April 20, 2010, after a well blowout. Most of the 126-member crew escaped from the burning oil rig before it sank into the Gulf. But 11 rig workers died and 30 others were seriously injured.

As deepwater drilling resumes in the Gulf of Mexico, Houston maritime accident attorney Kurt Arnold said it’s important to keep pressing oil and gas exploration companies to focus on safer drilling practices and precautions to protect offshore workers and prevent loss of life.

“We should never forget that 11 workers lost their lives in the BP Deepwater Horizon and consider the lasting impact that maritime disaster had on the families of offshore workers,” said Arnold, a partner in Arnold & Itkin LLP.

“The subsequent investigation has shown that the loss of life was preventable if BP had focused on safety,” he said. “We will keep asking if enough has been done to protect offshore workers and prevent another disaster.”

Q&A: Why are some Conservatives trying to blame President Obama for the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf?

Question by The Beckster: Why are some Conservatives trying to blame President Obama for the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf?
Do you actually think that President Obama would dive down 5000 feet and blow-up an oil rig?

You got to be kidding me, only a certified insane person would think such thoughts.

Why can’t you accept the fact that BP had an oil spill and leave it at that?

The conservatives and moderates have blocked all that sort of things in Congress for decades.
It simply doesn’t have the votes.
Nobody is proposing any legislation are they?
Because it won’t even come to a vote.

Regulation of business is a non-starter.

Beach wedding with the BP oil spill

bp Oil
by dsb nola

Everyone dreams of a beach wedding, since walking barefoot on the sands hand- in- hand in wedding dress, is something like a dream come true. But the dreams of many couples have been shattered due to the great BP oil spill in the gulf a few days ago.

It is a great blow not only to the wedding couples but also for many who are in the wedding business. The Florida Panhandle is known for beach weddings where more than 22,000 weddings take place annually. But since the oil spill more than fifty percent of the people have cancelled the venue for wedding. It is understandable because no bride would like to have her beautiful wedding dress getting soaked in oil and turning brown in color. It would be a mess for the guests too, obviously, as they would be stepping over tar balls to attend the ceremony.

But there are a few brave people who like to postpone their wedding or wait for the oil spill wreckage to get over. From Louisiana to Florida, the gulf of oil spill has been costing millions of dollars for those who are in beach wedding business such as photographers, caterers, DJs and others involved. Even the ministers, who like to put chairs on the beach, are not spared.

Florida’s panhandle is known as the Las Vegas of beach weddings and this oil spill has certainly taken a hammering on their business. One of the wedding planners said that it would be able to host only 20 weddings this year, as against 40 last year. This disaster is more than a hurricane threat because a bride would not want her wedding dress to be ruined on the wedding day itself just because of an oil spill of a human error.

The fishermen are the directly affected people but the fall of beach weddings is highly significant taking into consideration the various people involved in the business. But there are a few people who still like to get wed and those comprise the remaining fifty percent.

BP oil spill’s impact likely to last longer, says observer

bp Oil
by Infrogmation

Article by rowen

In comparison to a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina, the recent BP oil spill’s impact may last longer and have a broader impact, said a U.S. observer in Chicago on Monday.

In an interview with Xinhua, Jim Fox, senior consultant at Royal Roots Global Inc, a Chicago-based management consulting firm, said: “Hurricanes are a constant force of nature. While no one knows where they will strike, that they will strike is a certainty. They arrive, do their damage, and are swiftly gone. Recovery and rebuilding takes place, at varying paces depending upon the location and severity of the storm.”

On the other hand, Fox pointed out: “Oil spills are not acts of nature and recovery from them is a far different process.”

As an example of contrast, Fox compared the impact of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska with Hurricane Hugo later that year. He said: “The spill and its aftermath are clearly remembered by many despite the passage of more than 2 decades. In the same year a very severe hurricane, Hugo, struck the southeast coast near Charleston, South Carolina causing enormous damage.”

While the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez spill continues to make news from time to time, especially after similar accidents occur, Fox believes that far fewer people in the general population recall the specifics of the hurricane’s damage.

Regarding the short-term negative impacts of the oil spill on environment, Fox thinks that one major problem relates to the timing. He said: “The occurrence in spring means that it may impact the reproductive cycle for many species, and birds in particular. The economic impact on those sectors which depend on the environment, such as commercial fishing and recreation, will depend to a great extent on the duration and volume of the leak.”

As for the long-term effect, Fox thinks it depends as well on those factors. He said: “The record of far larger incidents over the past decades with similarities can be studied for clues on the long-term impacts. The present event is dwarfed by a far larger spill in 1979, when an exploratory oil well accident released a far greater amount of oil into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of many months. In addition, in 1991 Saddam Hussein ordered his retreating army to pump a far more massive amount of crude oil into the (Persian) Gulf.”

Fox considers the oil spill a very serious problem on many levels beyond the obvious immediate environmental and economic impacts.

He further explained: “The issue of energy, one of the most important before this event, is impacted in various ways. The emotional aspects, which are always present, become understandably magnified in the aftermath of such a dramatic event. It may have a political impact on the attempts to develop additional domestic sources of hydrocarbons.”

In addition, Fox believes that the impact on the regulatory process may prove substantial, with a likely review of the entire regulatory process. “Not the least of its impacts will be on the court system as an untold number of legal claims of all types will move forward,” he noted.

Commenting on the actions taken so far, Fox said: “As is the case in the aftermath of virtually every catastrophic incident, the response to the emergency will be second guessed.” One area that Fox thinks will receive inquiry is the pace of response by both the government and the company.

“It seems likely that there will be prolonged attention given to the roles of both the corporate and government actors in the crisis,” he said.

Talking about the lessons that China can learn from this incident, Fox said: “I believe that China can learn many helpful lessons from observing the experiences of other nations in the exploitation of offshore energy resources.”

“China has the opportunity to consider the methods and techniques which it will permit to be used with the goal of minimizing to the extent possible events similar to the ongoing disaster. China would be wise to balance the very substantial benefits of offshore energy development with the corresponding risks to the environmental, marine, agricultural, leisure and other interests in the coastal region,” he added.

Fox held various executive positions during his corporate career, including at one point having overall responsibility for environmental compliance of a multinational business.

On April 20, the explosion and sinking of a BP Plc oil rig and subsequent massive oil spill has claimed 11 lives and contaminated waters at the Gulf of Mexico with millions of gallons of oil. It has been nearly three weeks since the explosion and every day 5, 000 barrels of oil is still leaking into the gulf. Currently the oil has reached the shores of Louisiana, impacting the livelihoods of millions in the Gulf Coast states and threatening more.
